About the SaveSAU Coalition

The board of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) voted to remove Saint Augustine's University (SAU) from accreditation membership in December 2023. Their decision, in part, was based on historic issues with the Board of Trustees' noncompliance in providing fiduciary oversight. ,

In January 2024, a group of concerned alumni, students, parents, former administrators, former faculty, and SAU supporters came together to explore ways to save SAU in the absence of sound governance at the institution. SaveSAU Coalition, Inc. is a nonprofit organization with a mission of bringing together individuals and groups committed to working together to save SAU. The Coalition's board of directors is exploring the pursuit of tax exempt status.

Saving SAU

The Importance of Systemic Change at Saint Augustine's University.

Saint Augustine's University has a storied 157 year legacy of preparing leaders across the globe. The University is experiencing an existential threat to its survival. In order to overcome significant challenges, not only urgent action, but strategic action is required. SAU's survival depends on all of us. Despite our differences, there should be one single focus and one single goal: Saving Saint Augustine's University. Systemic changes are required to preserve the legacy of SAU and to protect its ability to serve future generations. Without systemic change, SAU will continue to suffer from:

Limited Partnership Opportunities

Key stakeholders expect sound leadership at the helm of Saint Augustine's University. SAU is uniquely positioned to leverage a host of partnership opportunities in the Triangle area. These opportunities do not present themselves in the face of poor governance.

Suboptimal Fundraising

There is a vast number of donors willing and wanting to give to SAU. Without trust and faith in SAU's governing board, fundraising will continue to be limited and not meet the level of financial need required.

Accreditation Issues

Accreditation standards represent a minimum set of requirements necessary to be successful in higher education. Proper governance and fiduciary oversight is fundamental to demonstrating SAU's readiness to accrreditation organizations.
